Description
L-Glutathione (GSH) is a tripeptide of glutamate, cysteine, and glycine, widely regarded as a key intracellular antioxidant. It functions as a cofactor for enzymes such as glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase, supporting neutralization of reactive oxygen species, detoxification of xenobiotics, and overall redox balance. Endogenously, glutathione circulates in reduced (GSH) and oxidized (GSSG) states, with the GSH:GSSG ratio commonly used as an indicator of oxidative stress. Research also associates reduced glutathione with roles in cell proliferation, apoptotic signaling, immune regulation, and mitochondrial protection.
